Back in May 2026 we covered the first shockwave of AI-linked layoffs. Three months later, the trend hasn’t slowed down, it has spread. By early August, trackers were counting more than 40 companies that had announced job cuts this year, and the list keeps growing.
Who’s Cutting Jobs Now
Business Insider’s running tally puts the number of affected companies at over 35, including Meta, Walmart, and Visa. India Today’s count runs even higher, over 40, adding names like LinkedIn, Target, Expedia, Coinbase, Crypto.com, Pinterest, Workday, and Zillow to the list. Yahoo Tech’s tracker flagged Zillow’s August cuts as one of the newest additions.
The Numbers Behind the Trend
Tech-focused tracker TrueUp counted 517 layoff events across the tech sector so far in 2026, affecting roughly 174,500 people, an average of more than 800 workers per day. That marks a rise compared to 2025 activity tracked by the same firm.
Is AI Really the Cause?
Companies rarely say outright that they replaced workers with AI. Official reasons usually point to cost-cutting or restructuring, but analysts keep noting the overlap with heavy AI infrastructure spending happening at the same time. Most researchers describe this wave as a mix of AI adoption, economic pressure, and cost discipline, rather than one single cause.
What It Means for Workers in 2026
Roles that pair human judgment with AI tools tend to be safer than purely repetitive ones. Building basic AI literacy and learning to work alongside tools like ChatGPT is becoming less optional and more of a baseline job skill in 2026. Our guide on ChatGPT for business growth covers practical ways to use these tools without waiting for a layoff notice to force the issue.
